WHAT IS THE ISSUE YOU ARE ADdRESSING?

GOAL:

The issue we are addressing is homelessness and water issues in New Mexico, and specifically Albuquerque. For this design project we are focusing on a plot by on the corner of I-25 and Central.  Since homelessness is such a huge problem in Albuquerque this lot is going to be modified to help and address it. To address the equally important problem of water issues, we are changing the landscape to save water and also using materials and accommodating resources that encourage saving water.

The goal of our design is to create a resources center for homeless people.  It will be called a Homeless Resource Center and it will act as a "pit stop" for homeless people to get the resources they need to get ahead in life. It will aslo have a bathroom and shower component where they can get clean, and also have something to eat and even a fresh change of clothing.

To address water issues, the plot will be landscaped based on the elevation, of the land so that water can be drained. appropriately and into a node with trees and benches. We will have bio swales surrounding the plot (seen in the photo below) where storm water will collect and percolate back into the soil to recharge the aquifer. We will also be using food that is considered to be food wast from grocery stores such as Whole Foods to supply the center with food. Food waste accounts for 25% of fresh water consumed in the U.S. That is about the size of lake Erie. We are also using shipping containers for the structure to try to use as many recycled materials as possible.
